Exploring the World of the Wild Geese and the Jacobite Cause, 1690-1770
The War of the Two Kings 1689-1691, fought between James Stuart II and William of Orange, resulted in James’ defeat. Many of his adherents, known as Jacobites, did not wish to accept William’s ascent to the Thrones of England, Scotland and Ireland. The Irish Jacobite Army accepted the Articles of Limerick, signed to bring an end to hostilities. While some of the officers who owned estates remained in Ireland, over 15,000 Irish soldiers chose to leave Ireland to join the 5,000 who had entered French service in the army of King Louis XIV. This migration has become known as the ‘Flight of the Wild Geese’.
Richard has dedicated many years to researching the life and world of Sir Charles Wogan (c1683-1754), a particular member of the Wild Geese community who strongly adhered to his Jacobite loyalty. This has given Richard a broad perspective which includes the War of the Two Kings; the establishment of the Protestant Ascendancy of Ireland and its penal laws against the majority Catholic population; the Jacobite restoration attempt of 1715; international power-politics of the first half of the eighteenth century; royal court culture; the life of migrants and exile communities; the Irish Brigade of Spain; the 1745 Jacobite Restoration attempt; and military history of the eighteenth century.
Let Richard be your guide through this rich and complex early modern world.
